Section I. Introduction Educational Beliefs I believe children all have ability and deserve to learn. Every child has a right to learn and get education. It’s a law everywhere in the world. I like the book of “Making the Case for Educating the Whole Child.” It supports my opinion by proving that educating the whole child means each child learns in an environment that is safe, and is actively engaged and is supported by qualified, caring adults, etc. Education is a preparatory experience, because life is a long journey. Education is a present when we were little and prepares us the paths we are going to take when we grow up. Education provides us a healthy lifestyle physically and emotionally. Education prepares us to connect to broader community and wide open world. It also prepares us for further study and for our future career and jobs in the world. I believe what kind of education you are getting is an important factor of the kind of person you will become. b. Personal Story I believe children all have ability and deserve to learn. Every child has a right to learn and get education. Without education, people will just live wherever their parents provide for them and hardly surpass that environment. That’s why education is a right and provide opportunities for all people. My husband was born in a poor suburban family. Because of the education he got and with his great effort, after he finish his Ph.D in the States, he and our family lived a beyond middle class life and now we come back in China with a expatriate package which can provide us a decent life in Beijing. That’s why education is a right and an opportunity for people to change their life. Education is a preparatory experience. I can see from my own children and my own experience. My children will become different people if I provide them different kinds of education. There are many different kinds of education. In Beijing especially. They have American school, British school, Chinese public and private school, providing different curriculum and teaching philosophy. When I think about what kind of education I want to give my children. I begin with the end in mind and think about in 20 years, what kind of people I want them to be. I want them to be a global citizen, a whole person, be empathetic and passion . Then I picked the most appropriate education for them. If I chose a different kind of education, they will become a different person because each school's mission/learning style would be different. There are different people in the world and they get different education from school and from their family. School and family are both important although now we talk more about school education. Another interesting point is what type of education is important too, and most suitable for all children. I believe children centered inquiry based education because that’s the must for students to reach their very best potential. when I was little, the education I got is mostly memorisation which is good for knowing some surface knowledge but is limited for students to think deeply and initiate the thinking themselves. I don’t agree with this learning method. If possible I would like to go back to 1st grade and learn to ask questions, learn to say no to authority and learn to have my own opinions. I bet if I got another kind of education, I would become a different person today. As a school leader, i’m grateful of having this opportunity to think about my education belief and why I believe this. I would put my effort to contribute to my own educational belief. c. Professional Experience One of my educational beliefs is to what type of education you receive decide what type of person you will be. I believe inquiry based teaching and to educate global citizens. I have been in education for over 10 years. I have taught grades K-8 Mandarin in two dual language programs in San Diego for 7 years, I have taught ESL to San Diego community college students for 3.5 years. I have also taught learning support at WAB in Beijing China for one year. During those years I have got extensive experience in curriculum writing, program coordination and classroom teaching. My leadership role in the Mandarin program includes helping new teachers and CI teachers and interns, sharing my curriculum, materials, teaching strategies, and arranging their daily work. My goal is to facilitate an open and safe environment for teachers to exchange ideas and to support the whole program grow. I also have been the first grade team lead. I have supported teachers to express their opinions and discussion; I have also coordinated the district and school needs. I have supported our school as being a presenter of both the 12th and 14th annual dual language institute at San Diego County Office of Education. I have also facilitated the “7 habits leader in me program” as a guide to promote every student, teacher and staff is a leader in our campus. My teaching philosophy is student-centered and inquiry-based/project based learning. I strongly believe inquiry-based learning as we implemented common core, thinking maps and writing learning headquarters. I'm using common core standards, which require teachers to teach higher critical thinking skills in math, science, social studies, language arts, etc. via doing inquiry-based teaching and learning. I'm actively been to all those professional trainings and used thinking maps and learning headquarters as tools to help with my teaching and reach those goals. I have also used a lot of technology to facilitate my teaching and curriculum writing, such as Schoology, Voice Thread, quizlet, online bingos, puzzles, etc. I also have created smart board lessons and ipad projects to promote student-centered interaction in my classroom. I understand it’s a trend and a key to use technology based teaching in the classroom and I need to know more about it. My presentational and communicational skills are also shown as I have helped to build sister schools in China at IEARN project in 2014 because I believe education is to foster 21st citizens. A way to connect and communicate with international peers is an important factor to foster 21st century citizens. I have been the presenter for our school in various forums and conferences. I also communicated with principal, my partner teacher, grade level team and Mandarin team as a leader at grade level and Mandarin program successfully. My education and work experience are my path to my moment now, to where I am now. They are the foundation of what teaching philosophy and educational belief. d. Leadership Style I will first create an environment where everybody trust each other, care for each other, we allow mistakes and give opportunities to keep growing, changing and making good choices. I will make sure that I set up the atmosphere that teachers feel free and never be afraid to try new things and want to work hard, try new things, and keep growing. I will provide a lot of support to my staff by asking what they need and trying to compensate what they need. I will provide opportunities for their professional development and personal growth. I will set models of choice of words and research based learning to students and staff. I will allow everybody make mistakes and make sure to talk with them one on one and find out the reason behind it and solve the problem together. e. Non-negotiables 1. first no bullying, and I will ask for the reason of this behaviour and solve it accordingly. This is the number 1 non-negotiable of my leadership philosophy. I won't tolerate any type of bullying. I will be proactive, not wait until the problem arises. I will meet with school counselors and schedule the strategy lessons weekly to each grade level. School counselors are experts to pre-teach those problems. However, as I said, I allow mistakes, but we need to solve it immediately. I will also talk with students involved and parents if necessary to set up behavior plans accordingly. 2. no repetition of the same mistakes. My number 2 non-negotiable is not repetition of the same mistakes from students. I won't tolerate the mistakes happen again and again from students. There should be a solution to solve it or make progress. I and my team will work together with the teacher to support the student have a plan to solve the problem. Section II. Subsections Subject: Curriculum and Instruction I believe inquiry based curriculum and student entered instruction. I believe that because only through inquiry based curriculums such as common core and IB curriculum, students will practice their ability in exploring, acting, investigating, discussion and reflection. They will learn how to cooperate with each other, how to ask questions and how to do research and investigate as well as do reflection on the topic they are learning. They become the learning initiative and want to learn more, will be an independent learner and will want to try different things, challenge the authority, have their own opinion, and be an independent and creative leader. Lots of issues/aspects of: promoting the inquiry based curriculum: For example: My school at San Diego started teacher training in Common Core curriculum in 2012, and started implement Common Core curriculum in 2014. We are the pioneer teachers of the new curriculum including NGSS and Common Core Math. I remember we planned the curriculum and lesson plans based on the standards everyday after school. We tried out the new lessons with inquiry based teaching to our kids and they accepted very pleasantly. And the inquiry based learning promoted their confidence and motivated their interest greatly. I’d like to talk about: How the inquiry based learning motivate students’ learning interest Explain your example: When I taught Kindergartener as a co-teacher at WAB, a famous IB school. They used PYP inquiry based cycle to promote students’ learning. I have seen that students picked up their interested topics and explored the topic themselves, we as teachers provided them a lot of resources such as if they need computer, we help them to do research; if they can’t read, we help read to them. Otherwise, they do all the learnings themselves, they worked with a small groups, they discussed with their peers and teachers, they created very thoughtful products. Subject: Parent and Community Involvement I believe that family and community involvement are very important to students. School and family should build up a win-win partnership together. I believe that because a child spends more time at home than at school, parents and family are their most important factor to their physical, academic and emotional growth. Good parents have more influence than a good teacher to a child. Parents and teachers need to work together, that way, a child can reach the most of his/her potential. During my time of growth, my parents and teachers have worked together very well, my parents support teachers and school supports my family. They all support me and educate me to be an independent, confident and happy individual. Lots of issues/aspects of: increasing parents involvement in our schools: For example: parents can support schools in a lot of ways. Such as they can support teachers in the classroom, they can be as room mom, PTA helpers, and school board members, etc. They can run different activities with school together, they can participate school ran activities to show their support. And they can support their children’s teachers and help their children be successful. I’d like to talk about: how parents support teachers in the classroom Explain your example: When I was a homeroom teacher in the States, one year I have 5 parents as my room moms, they worked very well as one parent as the main director, one mom as the activity runner, one as the treasurer, one mom as a photographer, etc. They supported me in all the ways they can, so the teachers can focus more on their teaching and planning, not taking time too much on other things. The most benefited are their children and the parents know that, they helped all the children in the classroom, they showed their children the meaning of working together, and leadership skills. Subject: Discipline and School Climate/Culture I believe that school’s climate should be involving. Involve, accept and welcome all students and parents in the community. I believe that because the school should be a place everybody wants to go to and feels comfortable to depend on. A school should welcome students of all kinds. School’s discipline plan should be no harm to yourself, no harm to each other, and no harm to the environment. Lots of issues/aspects of: how to involve everybody at school and how to implement three no harms at school : For example: My current school hangs the whole school rules of three no harms on the hallway so that everybody can see and will follow. The school has whole school assembly every Friday to invite parents and other stakeholders to see, these assemblies involve all students sing the school song together, perform together. The school also involves parents in other activities such as guest speakers, school visits, field trips, parent workshops, etc. And involve everybody at school will create a whole school learning environment of belonging. Everybody belongs to the school community. I’d like to talk about: How my previous school create a involving school climate/culture together Explain your example: My previous school, Riverview International Academy is a trilingual school, it provides three languages to students: Mandarin, Spanish and English. A lot of families went to our school from other school district because of the school’s special program and fame. The school involves parents as a family by doing a lot of activities together, such as jog-a-thorn, seven habits lessons and workshops, Chinese new year, Spanish holidays, international day etc. It connects all stakeholders together and be very transparent because the school knows everybody here are for the same reason and it provides everybody opportunities to involve. Subject: Technology I believe that technology is a great tool to support students’ learning. I believe that because in the 21st century, technology is a must for the new generation and they are very effective to motivate and promote students’ learning. Lots of issues/aspects of how to use technology. For example: Is it going to hurt eyes if using technology too much? Can technology substitute paper writing and reading. Some parents may not support using technology because of these reasons. How school involve and get parents’ support in using technology need all leaders and teachers to think. And using technology will support students’ learning if use it effectively. I’d like to talk about: How to get parents’ support in using technology. Explain your example: To get parents’ support in using technology, we as school leaders should first show parents how effective the technology is. We could run workshops in explaining what we can do with the technology. My previous school sent out flyers of what we used technology (ipads) in our classrooms. Parents showed appreciation because they wanted to continue supporting their children’s learning at home. My current school has a lot of technology, lower school students has 1:1 ipads, and upper school students has 1:1 Imac. Students have already used technology in their daily learning, such as posting their blogs, doing maths, practicing spelling, making movies, reporting and making news, etc. Parents are very supportive as well, because they can see their children’s leaning through teacher and students’ blogs. They know their children will be more competitive and know more things now and when they grow up. Week 4Due Nov 17: Write your Leadership Style and Non-Negotiables Blog Posts (about 250 words each)
I will first create an environment where everybody trust each other, care for each other, we allow mistakes and give opportunities to keep growing, changing and making good choices. I will make sure that I set up the atmosphere that teachers feel free and never be afraid to try new things and want to work hard, try new things, and keep growing. Week 2I believe first, education is a preparatory experience, prepare us to become the kind of person we want to be in the long life. Week 1I believe children all have ability and deserve to learn. Every child has a right to learn and get education. It’s a law everywhere in the world. I like the book of “Making the Case for Educating the Whole Child.” It told us that “each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle”, “each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults,” “each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community”, “each student has access to personalised learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults” and “each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and participation in a global environment.” (2012) Education is a preparatory experience, because life is a long journey. Getting the education in China (from Chinese public schools), I got a good foundation of math and science, as well as Mandarin. When I and my husband decided to go to the U.S. to pursue further education after we got B.A. in China, we know the western education is going to prepare us for more choices and better life in our future. When need to decide what kind of education for our children, we know it’s vital for their future life. We decided to put them into international school where English is the main language, and they also receive Mandarin 30% a day, because we know in their future world, English will be the main language in the world working environment, but Mandarin will be the key to help them understand who they are and make more choices in the future. International schools provide them a safe and healthy learning environment where they get individualized, inquiry-based, student-cantered instruction. This will provide children to become a whole child, a physical and emotional healthy child, a child who initiate their own learning and also become an independent person who is in control of his/her own thinking, a leader, not a follower.
