Section 8
District Applications
I have done a deep research about the programs and applications. I first did some research myself, I went to our school inner website and based on my knowledge, I know some applications but not a lot and have no way to analyse it. I then set up appointments with school principal, ICT teachers, the manager of IT and other department manager such as HR and Finance and even some parents.
After talking with them, I have learned it’s important to work with all stakeholders to prioritise the applications. The school has multiple systems and applications that work together to make the organization function. Some applications have been around for many years (such as Powerschool, SAGE for school finance, and Platinum for HR)and some have been updated and changed within last several years (such as VIMP, some website-based applications). Especially Easyblog Jr. which was proudly designed by WAB ICT teachers. Some has been doing pretty good and will continue serve the school (e.g. Powerschool) after IT and ICT teachers’ support in setting up and consistent maintenance. Other applications have shown some gaps with the need of users and need more updates (such as SAGE for school finance, and Platinum for HR).
After talking with the Principal of WAB, ICT teachers, the manager of IT and other department manager such as HR and Finance and even some parents, I understood that the priority of these applications depend on several factors. 1. From the principal and parents, it’s definitely by students’ needs. The most and the only goal is to satisfy students’ needs. 2. By the task they are doing. ICT teachers mentioned that they probably need to work and support more on the applications for new teachers and also depend on what subjects, when they need it, they provide “just-in-time” service to give them more and immediate help on those applications. 3. IT manager mentioned that it depends on the importance of the applications or urgency of it.
To conclude, we have to work together with all stakeholders to prioritise these applications.
Analysis of the Application Rationalization
I have talked with the Principal of WAB, ICT teachers, the manager of IT and other department manager such as HR and Finance and even some parents to discuss all the elements of the program and its applications. I have learned the importance to work together with all stakeholders and identify and compare applications and know the rationale compare to the future applications. Take SAGE from school finance department as an example. I’ve talked with both IT department manager and Finance department manager, they both agree that SAGE has been used many years at WAB for accounting, however, it has a drastic gap between the result of application and the satisfaction of users. With the development of technology, SAGE has shown some lagged behind in accounting and recording. For “functional assessment” and “technical assessment” we can only give it a “4 Data base structure is relational with supporting data query tools. The software is fully web enabled.” For “standards definitions” it only gets “declining technology that is broadly deployed throughout the infrastructure but is not the technology of choice for new systems”. It’s still enabled and useable, but is declining and needs updates or change as soon as possible. It’s in their five year plan to modify it, but they haven’t got a comparable future software yet.
